Job: Hydrogeologist
The Department of Geological Sciences at Ohio University seeks a field-oriented hydrogeologist for a full-time tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level. Research strengths of particular interest include mineland hydrogeology, acid mine drainage, and contaminant hydrogeology. The applicant’s research should augment and complement existing strengths, especially within our Environmental & Surficial Processes research cluster, which includes low-temperature geochemistry, hydrothermal systems, lakes, karst and fluvial geomorphology, and stream processes and restoration. The applicant’s research area may also complement existing strengths within the Consortium for Energy, Economics and the Environment (www.ce3.ohio.edu). The applicant is expected to supervise B.S. senior theses in Geology and M.S. students in Geology and/or Environmental Studies. Supervision of Ph.D. students is possible through multi-departmental collaborations. The successful candidate will be able to teach introductory-level environmental courses and upper-level hydrogeology courses. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in hydrogeology or related field with a record of successful teaching and grant- and contract-supported research in hydrogeology. The specific area of research is open, but contaminant transport, groundwater/surface water interactions, and groundwater management are areas of particular interest. A record of published research and a record of supervision of graduate student thesis/dissertation research in hydrogeology. Experience in teaching a variety of hydrogeology courses at upper-division undergraduate and graduate level. Strong evidence of potential for developing and sustaining an independent, externally funded research program involving students that will lead to scientific publications and presentations. Ability to communicate effectively with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: An established hydrogeologist with demonstrated excellence in teaching and research and existing connections with the professional community. Demonstration of the abilities necessary to develop and lead a graduate level (M.S. degree) program in applied hydrogeology. A record of successfully supervising graduate student research. An ability or desire to collaborate with faculty in geological sciences and civil engineering to develop a hydrogeology program of prominence in Southern California. Ability or desire to integrate geophysical and geochemical methods that will build upon existing strengths in the department.
DUTIES: To develop and lead a graduate (M.S. level) program in hydrogeology involving faculty from Geological Sciences and Civil Engineering, supported by the annual return from the $1 million Bert and Ethel Conrey endowment and a long-term development campaign, in addition to start-up funding. Primary responsibilities are to teach and to train B.S. and M.S. students for employment with environmental geology and engineering firms, to develop a graduate program of prominence, to secure external support through grants and contracts, and to maintain a research program recognized for excellence. Participate in department, university, and community service.
PROBABLE SALARY RANGE: $70,000 - $100,000, depending upon rank and experience.
